Holding onto water reserves and protecting them from theft may be one of the most important things when it comes to preparing for disaster.  The problem is that water is difficult to conceal and many options require a lot of hard work in order to pull off.  Let’s look at some practical options to consider as you develop your storage system.

Cisterns
The best place to store water under the radar is by using large, underground cisterns or tanks.  This will not only help you to keep a large quantity on hand, but it will be difficult to detect unless a nosy neighbor or other interested party happens to see you installing the tanks.  The biggest drawback associated with using cisterns is the amount of effort that needs to go into installing them.  Digging holes manually is back-breaking work, while using professional-grade tools such as a back hoe involves a lot of noise and disruption that can attract unwanted attention.

The other problem with cisterns is the need to develop a pump or access system that will deliver the water as needed.  The type of pump that will be the most effective will depend on the size of the cistern, how deep it is buried and how much water you need at any given point in time.

The best advice in this case is to plan the installation carefully, consider fabricating a cover story and be discreet so that people won’t be tipped off as to what you are doing.

False Compartments
Hiding water can be done in ways that are useful for concealing valuables and weapons.  Make false compartments, cover them with innocuous facades and hope that someone won’t discover it.  This may seem crazy, but it can be particularly useful, especially in an urban survival situation where access to land and large storage tanks is limited.  Consider things like placing containers in walls, under floors or inside things like bulky furniture or bed frames.

Using a hollowed-out mattress or box spring is another idea to consider as this would probably be the last place someone would look for water.  Use a waterbed liner, place it inside the frame of the mattress, fill it up with water and then put the top of the mattress back on.  This may seem excessive, but this is just one example of the necessity to really get creative when it comes to concealing and guarding your water supply.

Diversify
Another point to consider is how to avoid keeping all of your eggs in one basket.  Diversify and make sure that you have numerous sources of drinking water available in case one of them gets discovered and drained.  Keeping multiple sources of water available also helps to ensure that your whole supply will not get tainted if a particular container or source becomes contaminated.  You should also consider hiding water at your intended bug out locations as well as outfitting your vehicle with some hidden water compartments as well.

We tend to focus on things like water storage, purification and access during an emergency.  However, it’s just as important to think about how you are going to keep your supplies secret as well.  Unfortunately, there are no easy answers or solutions that work for everyone.  Consider where you live, potential threats in terms of looting or theft and your overall needs as you develop a low-key storage system.  The goal is to minimize risk while also maximizing access to water when you need it the most.  Brainstorm and share ideas so that we can all benefit and become better prepared.
