The recent attempts from the Obama administration to expand federal gun control laws are just a drop in the bucket compared to what some states keep trying to pull off. While many states, particularly conservative ones, are increasing gun rights, many are also coming up with some ridiculous measures that violate the second amendment. It’s important to keep abreast of these ongoing developments in order to be aware of laws in your area as well as to take a stand against oppressive gun control nationwide.

California

California has a long history of enacting strict gun control laws despite the fact that they do little to curb violence. One recent example is a bill, that fortunately failed, that would have required residents to apply for a permit to buy and keep ammunition. This would have included a background check as well as providing the state with personal information so they could track who was buying ammo, what kind of ammo, and exact quantities.

Another bill currently under consideration is the expansion of the definition of assault weapons. If this bill is passed, any gun that has a detachable magazine would need to be registered with the state. The gun owner would also need to apply for a permit in order to legally-possess that firearm. Failure to do so could result in confiscation, fines and imprisonment.

Hawaii

The Hawaii legislature has gone off the deep end with some really vague and scary legislation that is currently in various committee stages. One measure would prohibit gun ownership by individuals who have committed certain misdemeanor crimes. Another states that anyone who has been hospitalized, without more specific language, can be banned from owning a gun. Another measure will require all gun owners to be monitored and tracked by the FBI.

Virginia

The Virginia governor vetoed certain aspects of a self-defense bill that would have allowed people who have orders of protection against someone to temporarily carry a gun without a concealed-carry permit. This means that people who are facing an imminent threat from someone else can not legally take all means necessary to protect themselves. This repeal is dangerous because it gives criminals more rights than victims, and victims can now be prosecuted if they use a non-permitted weapon to defend themselves.

Anti-gun legislation moving through the state assembly will prohibit those who have a restraining order, for any reason, from possessing a firearm. If this law is passed, every accused individual would need to surrender their weapons until their case is adjudicated. So much for being innocent until proven guilty. This law will most undoubtedly make its way through the federal appeals process if enacted.

remoteNevada

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has found a way to get a gun control measure on the 2016 ballot in Nevada. The measure would force anyone who is giving or receiving a firearm to undergo the federal background check program. Anyone who wants to loan, give, donate, sell, transfer or otherwise relinquish or obtain control of a firearm would need to go to a licensed gun dealer, get registered and go through the screening process. This must occur every time a transfer occurs.

These are just a few examples of the many initiatives that are currently being taken up by states to control guns. Unfortunately, many people do not know about the number and extent of these various laws because the media does not talk about them. However, the passage of any of these bills can establish a dangerous precedent that other states or the federal government can use to further erode our rights to keep and bear arms. Not only that, but these laws also give the government the power to exert greater control over our lives, invade our privacy and limit our constitutional freedoms.

Unfortunately, there is little that we can do to stop this movement from sweeping across the country. It’s only a matter of time before the federal government will find a way to permanently erode our second amendment rights. Remember, this is what they want. They don’t want a free society that limits the power of the government. The government wants to limit the power of society, and disarming the population is one of the best ways that they can accomplish their goals.

The question is how are you going to prepare for the emergence of a full-blown police state in this country?
